MUTDESIGN
(Installation Zone, Level 4)

MUT is a design studio Founded in 2010 by designer Alberto Sánchez and Eduardo Villalón, formed by a multidisciplinary team.

Their inspiration comes from nature and apparently prosaic objects making up the puzzle of their daily life, always true to the principles of emotional design. Experimenting with those everyday objects in order to redefine them is one of their important hallmarks. Thanks to their independent personality, MUT have become design icons. Their award-winning products are regularly featured in the pages of leading magazines around the world and they are currently listed among the most popular and highly regarded designers of their generation. At Blend 2024 they will present ‘Canto, The Fragile and the Robust’ – an installation about a conversation of forms, an experience full of stimuli, an interaction with materials. It’s a declaration of intentions: this is how we are, this is how we work, this is where we move forward.

“We want this exhibition to reflect how we increasingly bring the disciplines of art and design closer together, we blend and combine them.”

MAKOTO INOUE
(Dome)
Makoto Inoue is a Berlin based new media artist and Techno producer. Inoue moved to Berlin in 2018, driven by his fascination with techno music. Coming from a temple background with his father as a priest, Inoue was taught Buddhism from a young age but was equally inspired by music, influenced by his upbringing in Roppongi, a town known for its nightclubs. His unique background has shaped his current pursuits. After obtaining his initial monk’s license, he took a turn towards acting when offered a role in a major NHK drama series. Midway through his career in Japan, Jan Svankmajer invited him to Prague, where he gained recognition in stage production across urope, winning several awards. He also spent three years teaching pantomime and performing arts as an assistant professor at the Czech University of the Arts. Back in Japan, he was active in stage theatre, participating in Roppongi Art Night and directing a project for the National Theatre of Japan. After his final stage performance in Avignon, France, in 2016, he transitioned fully into music, having previously composed for his performances and other theatre companies.

In 2018, after his move to Berlin, he released techno music throughout Europe. He capitalized on his diverse experiences when he directed a film in which he played the lead, composed the soundtrack, and handled all editing, earning numerous accolades. Since 2022, his main focus has been on audiovisual performances, and he is currently active across Europe, primarily based in Berlin.

He has expanded his artistic repertoire to include music live shows, exhibitions, and stage productions. In 2023, he curated a music installation for Leiko Ikemura’s exhibition. In March and April 2024 he got the big success from the first solo exhibition ‘Phenomenon Orchestra’ in Urban Spree Berlin.

Currently, the main theme Inoue explores in his work is based on fractal structures, as he has found a commonality between fractal structures and the Buddhist concept of reincarnation.

DAVID DAVID & HI-JIN HODGE
(Dome)

At Blend 2024, David and Hi-Jin Hodge will present their short film, ‘FIRE’.

Imagine losing everything you own. What would you save? ‘FIRE’ explores this question in a short 11-minute film.

We asked 100 people: “If your house was on fire, and everyone was safe, what would you grab?” Responses varied: some chose nothing, others valued irreplaceable items like photos, art, or books.

Many mentioned technology, but few cared about easily replaceable consumer goods—revealing how disposable our possessions have become.
This question goes beyond personal items; it’s about our relationship with consumption. In a society that takes, makes, and wastes, what truly matters? In the developed world, 20% of people consume 80% of the resources. If the world is burning, what choices do we make? Featuring the song ‘Little Boxes’ by Malvina Reynolds, the film invites reflection on conformity, materialism, and our future. We hope it encourages you to reconsider what you value and how your choices impact our shared world.

“We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” Chief Seattle.

So, we leave you with this: What would you choose if your house was on fire, and what does that choice say about you?

This was a spontaneous work, filmed in three countries, shot entirely on an iPhone with the onboard microphone and available light.
