ROBERT D. THOMPSON

Robert D. Thompson Casas is a professor, science communicator, and active researcher in somatics. His academic background encompasses three key areas: Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (USA), Industrial Design from the Art Center College of Design (USA), and Business and Commercial Strategy from INSEAD, the European Institute of Business Administration (France).

In recent years, his work has centred on researching and developing an integrative field of study known as “somatics,” which aims to explore and define the foundational relationships between form, function, intelligence, meaning, and the connection of matter, thereby bridging the innovation gap between fundamental sciences and creative disciplines.

Robert serves as the scientific director of MATERFAD, the Materials Center of Barcelona, created and promoted by FAD (Fostering Arts and Design). In this role, he leads the centre’s training and consultancy services and also acts as a science communicator, focusing on the integration of materials science into design and its role as a driver of social change.
